The position will take place in the IMPACT team (Images and models for surgical planning and assistance). One of the research themes of the IMPACT team is image guided procedures for cardiovascular diseases with a large experience in endovascular prostheses placement. A more recent topic concerns Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) that has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional aortic valve replacement for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are otherwise left untreated due to the perceived high risk of operative mortality. Computer-aided and augmented reality based planning, steering and placement of endovascular devices is a challenging objective that may contribute to make more secure and reliable the TAVI procedure.
In the context of the European project ITEA2-Mediate, coordinator : Philips, including industrial and academic partners, the objective of the work is to study and implement methods for : (1) 3D/2D registration of pre-/intra-operative data and overlay of some pre-operative data onto interventional images ; (2) high speed dynamic intra-operative fusion of structures and devices of interest, with the development of adapted approaches for simulation and planning of navigation, 3D/2D tracking, augmented reality navigation and visualization, in order to adjust the valve positioning before valve deployment and control the deployment ; (3) clinical tool integration and evaluation.
This work will be based on previous experience conducted in the laboratory on image-guided procedures for interventional gestures in cardiac imaging.
Candidate profile:
- Knowledge of image registration, motion estimation, tracking, visualization, simulation
- Strong programming experience in C++ is necessary (experience in development using ITK and VTK libraries would be appreciated )
- Experience in medical image processing would be appreciated.
The candidate must be rigorous, creative and motivated by teamwork and applied biomedical research.
