Complexity, systems of systems, challenges for the society opportunities for engineering Abstract: The progress in modeling, computer systems, size reduction of sensors and the pervasive communication networks has generated a humongous flow of information never seen before by the humankind. Engineers face new challenges beyond the design, construction or management of a system. The new challenges include the design, operation and management of systems of systems demanding the creation of new tools for management, modeling, analysis and optimization. This talk shows challenges and research oriented to the modeling, design, optimization and control of systems of systems and large scale systems. RESUME Jairo J. Espinosa Oviedo Graduated with honors as Master (Cum laude) and a Ph.D. (Magna Cum Laude)in Electrical Engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. Since 2006 he is Associated Professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellín where he currently hold the position of vice dean of research affairs. For seven years he was researcher and R&D Manager at the company IPCOS in Belgium and The Netherlands where he developed software applications and methodologies for Advanced Process Control. He has participated in several European projects in 4th, 5th and 7th framework and he has authored and co-authored more than 70 scientific papers in areas such as computational intelligence, mathematical modeling, bioengineering and control.
