Abstract: In this seminar, we will introduce our research and developments in brain computer interfaces (BCI), making special emphasis on new clinical applications in reanimation. We will describe the "brain ventilator interface" (BVI), a new class of applications for BCI: monitoring of respiratory states from EEG signals. This BVI is designed to detect respiratory discomfort in subjects on mechanical ventilation. The BVI exploits the cortical activation provoked by the inspiratory compensation when the patient and the ventilator when the last one is not properly tunned. Using a semi-supervised approach and Riemannian geometry of EEG covariance matrices allows effective classification of respiratory states. The BVI was validated on healthy subjects under different respiratory states. Results evidenced that classification performances are significantly improved using EEG signals compared to traditional detection based on air flow.
