Simulation of cardiac ultrasound images

Simulation d’images d’échographies cardiaques

** English below**

M2 / Engineering Internship Offer

Simulation of Cardiac Ultrasound Images

Interventional cardiology procedures enable the treatment of a wide range of life-threatening conditions, including heart valve diseases. These procedures are generally performed using a combination of real-time X-ray imaging (fluoroscopy) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). TEE provides high-quality ultrasound images of the heart using a probe inserted into the patient’s esophagus. To train deep learning models for ultrasound probe guidance, the first step is to generate simulated transesophageal echocardiography images that realistically represent cardiac structures while providing ground-truth information about the anatomy depicted (segmentation) and the position of the simulated probe. This simulation will typically rely on 3D CT images. This internship focuses on this task, using a tool developed at LTSI [1,2] and comparing it with methods from the literature.Tasks

-          Literature review on cardiac ultrasound image simulation

-          Implementation and evaluation of the approach developed at LTSI [1, 2]

-          Comparison with deep learning-based methods

Candidate profile

-          Ongoing master's degree (M2) or 5th-year engineering student

-          Programming skills (Python, C++)

-          Knowledge in image processing

-          Experience with a deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) would be an asset

-          Strong interest in research in healthcare technologies

Expected start: early 2026
