Image Analysis for Reducing the Dose to the Heart in Left-Breast Radiation Therapy

Six-Month Master / Engineering Internship Opportunity for the 2026 – 2027 Academic Year

Clinical context and objectives

External beam radiation therapy involves delivering ionizing radiation to targeted tissues using linear accelerators, with the goal of damaging cancer cells to prevent their growth and proliferation. In the case of breast cancer, it is routinely prescribed as an adjunct to breast-conserving surgery (in which only the tumor was removed) to destroy any remaining cancer cells. The radiation delivered during radiation therapy can damage healthy tissue and cause side effects. In the context of left-breast radiation therapy in particular, the proximity of the heart exposes certain structures (notably the coronary arteries and the myocardium) to radiation, which may increase the patient’s long-term cardiovascular risks.

Several techniques for planning, managing patient movement, and positioning the patient can help minimize these risks. In particular, the use of the breath-hold technique can reduce the dose to the heart in many cases. However, its use requires additional imaging, results in a longer treatment time, and necessitates appropriate patient training. This internship will focus on developing and evaluating algorithms for analyzing preoperative images with the goal of predicting, in advance, the potential benefit of breath-hold therapy. Deep learning algorithms for characterizing the patient’s anatomy (segmentation) will be developed, and anatomical features predictive of the benefit of breath-hold therapy will be identified.

The internship will take place at the Laboratoire Traitement du Signal et de l’Image (Université de Rennes, LSTI – Inserm 1099) and the Eugène Marquis Rennes Cancer Center (CLCC Eugène Marquis).
